This activity should be done after a lesson on the Bill of Rights as an extension for students to discover how constitutional rights apply during school hours. Need an amendment lesson? See “Constitutional Amendments PowerPoint, Notes & Activity” in my TpT store.
Students will be visiting stations and as a group identifying the constitutional amendment involved in six actual cases and they will act as Justices to determine how the case should be decided.
• Mini posters of 6 Supreme Court cases revolving around constitutional rights of students and schools.
• Student handout
• The actual rulings in simplified terms that highlight the “bottom line” of the case and its application to schools
• Follow up performance assessment (with grading rubric) in which students defend their position of the statement “Students do not shed their constitutional rights at the school house gates.” This activity includes a pre-writing activity to ensure student success.
