The following product contains three short answer writing prompts that ask students to consider Nathaniel Hawthrone's use of setting as a symbol. Each question builds upon the transformation of the story's setting. Students first re-read a portion of the text. Next, they describe what is literally being explained in the passage and then make an inference regarding how the passage is symbolic. Finally, students will use their descriptions and inferences to respond to a short answer writing prompt. This has been very useful in my classroom to scaffold writing for my academic students. I hope you have the same success!
