The following product contains two short answer writing prompts that ask students to consider Nathaniel Hawthrone's use of objects (the staff and pink ribbons) as symbols. Each question asks students to compare passages from the text. Students first re-read a portion of the text. Next, they describe what is literally being explained in the passages and then make an inference regarding how the passage is symbolic. Finally, students will use their descriptions and inferences to respond to a short answer writing prompt. This has been very useful in my classroom to scaffold writing for my academic students. I hope you have the same success!
