This document is the full-text of Nathaniel Hawthorne's short story "Young Goodman Brown." The text is annotated and scaffolded to assist students as they launch into more challenging literature (I usually teach this story before either The Scarlet Letter or The Crucible). The text includes vocabulary (with definitions), reading comprehension questions, and footnotes. The questions ask students to focus on specific lines (close reading), explore symbolism, and work on visualization. I have found this annotated text was very helpful working with both English language learners and special education students (in a co-teaching setting where students were offered a choice between the traditional text and this scaffolded version).
