This programme is for children usually between the ages of 3.5-7. It uses a thematic and activity based approach to help very young children acquire foundation concepts together with the language required to express their understanding of concepts. The approach is through play but the emphasis is on oral interaction between teacher and child. Children at this stage are not really able to follow task focused instructions and have not yet developed any interaction skills. These children like to explore and discover things and will receive language support as they progress. It will teach them independent thinking skills, conversation, independent listening and speaking skills, problem solving, communication skills, analytical skills and logic and reasoning plus “contingency think”, which is thinking ‘outside the box’. It includes speech and drama and an introduction to phonology. The age range is between 3.5 and 7 years and all children need the skills taught in this programme for their future development. The programme is long term because the child must really absorb the mental changes that they will be taught. For this reason, a child may attend this course from between six months to two years. When the child has demonstrated the core outcomes and has become phonologically sensitive, they will be promoted to the next programme.
