Here is a 3--4 day activity which helps students explore the theme of the short story "Akiak: A Tale from the Iditarod" by Robert J. Blake. It is a story about a 10 year old sled dog who is determined to win the Iditarod race. Through the book, students learn about the conditions of the Alaskan multi-day dog race as well as understand wonderful examples of determination, goal setting and the definition of success.
In a hands on activity, the students walk through multiple steps to create a mobile that demonstrates the themes of the book. This lesson uses partnering, group discussion, individual analytical skills, students supporting opinion through text and an art activity. It can be done with construction paper, string and markers or in a more elaborate way.
This works great as a book club activity, an after school enrichment activity or as part of a reading or writing enrichment class. Also a good sub plan that can last 3-4 sessions.
Detailed daily instructions and student templates are included. Also included are generic templates so instructor can use the same lesson to teach character analysis or use the lesson with other books.
