Civil War Homefront Addition!

President Lincoln faced many difficult situations and made many controversial decisions during his tenure as President. This activity introduces five of Lincoln's major decisions on Copperheads and internal dissent, the parameters of the Emancipation Proclamation, the draft, the fate of army deserters, and Reconstruction. There is no clear correct decision for any of these topics.

This is an excellent introductory exercise; I always pair it with a small or large group conversation. These activities are best introduced early on the unit before students get a good handle on the history. It gets students interacting, thinking, discussing, and debating history and the decisions of historical figures, which are vital critical thinking skills.
