I have had great success using these materials as part of an interactive notebook with my upper-grade guided reading groups. I created them for my English learners based on work by Jan Richardson, but they work well with any student who needs a clear, step-by-step process to understand and practice reading strategies.
The left side is an introduction and step-by-step activity that is done as a group with teacher guidance and instruction, while the right side is for independent practice.
After photocopying the number of pages that you need, cut them down the middle and have students glue them in their interactive composition notebook with the left side of the paper on the left side of the composition notebook and right side of the paper on the right side of the composition notebook.
Not only do these activities walk students through the process, but they also serve as a reference for students to look back at in their notebook instead of searching all over for stray papers. I sincerely hope that they work well for you, too. Enjoy!
