This is a fun and challenging lab that you can use to teach your students about speed, gravity, potential energy, kinetic energy, mass, and momentum! The materials required are fairly simple, and your students will, without a doubt, have their thinking caps on while completing this! This lab takes my students a solid hour including introducing the lab, etc., so it is a Great lab to use for collecting data and following the steps of the scientific method. As with all labs and lessons, try this out to get a feel for how it will work in your class! You can always modify the instructions/materials to fit the needs of your students. Have fun! The answer sheet is attached for convenience.
Materials Needed: Four books (the thickness of the books is up to you - the thinner the books, the easier the lab is to complete), triple-beam balance, two marbles (one large and one normal), ruler with a "notch" in the middle that will allow a marble to roll down (you can use a board with a notch in the middle as well as long as it is about a foot long), stopwatches, and plastic cups (I use Solo) with a "section" cut out. (Hint: When you are making the plastic cup with section cut out, make it about Double the size of the large marble so it will roll in easily).
The designed PDF can be enjoyed the way it is, but a straightforward editable word doc is included as well.
