Yuck! is a really easy way to review student sight word knowledge, and the kids don’t even realize that it’s a review! There are many different ways that this game can be played, so feel free to develop your own version of game play if you don’t like mine. ☺
Once you have printed off this set of cards (I would use cardstock), laminate them to make them last longer. Then cut them apart and you’re ready to play!
Set includes: 100 sight word cards
10 Yuck! cards
This game is best done with a small group of students – no more than 6 works well. Place all of the cards upside down in the center of the group and spread the cards out a little so they are no longer in a stack. Choose a student to start. That student picks one card from the middle:
Sight Word Card: If the student can successfully read the sight word, he/she can keep the card; if not, the card is placed back in the middle.
Yuck! Card: If the student draws a Yuck! card, he/she must put all of his/her cards back into the middle.
Only one card is drawn per student per turn. Then the next student takes his/her turn, and so on and so on and so on.
The game ends whenever you decide to end it, or when all of the word cards have been drawn, but I never let them play long enough to get to that point.
