This lesson is devised to make math relevant in students everyday lives. Students practice adding and subtracting decimals using a Portillo's menu. (The menu can be found through their website.) Math vocabulary words such as difference, place value, least, most, etc. Students are asked to answer specific questions as well as create their own combinations. This higher level thinking helps students practice a variety of skills.
In addition to math skills, students also have to answer a few reading comprehension questions that go along with the history of the restaurant. This allows them to practice using informational texts. This lesson can be used across the content areas.
