Phonics Boxes are activities formatted for the boxes available at Michaels that contain 16 smaller boxes. These activities can also be stored in 6x9 brown envelopes or any other way you would like to store them. Each “box” contains a sound or syllable sort and a flashcard activity/game. The cards can also be used just as flashcards and, if laminated, you can have your students use dry erase markers to highlight phonic concepts (such as vowels, digraphs, blends, etc.) There is a title card for the front of the box or envelope and directions. I use double-sided tape to adhere them.
“ZAP” is an activity for short vowels. It contains no digraphs or blends. Header cards are included for each of the short vowels. 40 cards with pictures and the word with the vowel left blank are included. As students decide which vowel will complete the word, they also get some really good practice trying the words with different vowels!
For the game “ZAP”, 40 word cards, 15 ZAP cards, and 15 Superhero cards (with nonsense words) – shuffle together.
Students take turns reading the cards. If they get a ZAP card they put one card back. If they get a Superhero card and can read the nonsense word, they get an extra turn. The student with the most cards at the end is the winner.
HAVE FUN WITH PHONICS!
