Zane and the Hurricane is a brilliant piece of writing by Rodman Philbrick, full of imagery, figurative language, dialect, and many other components of quality literature. We used Zane and the Hurricane as a part of a "Disaster" themed reading unit. This reading guide comes filled with reading activities students can do before, during, and after the reading of the novel. They will be:
-watching a video and answering questions to help them understand the background of Hurricane Katrina
-identifying figurative language
-identifying and understanding dialect
-identifying direct and indirect characterizations
-identifying mood and tone
-identifying author's purpose
-identifying static and dynamic characters
The download includes a word document that you can edit, a PDF, and an answer guide. There is a link to the youtube video referenced.
(Included in the guide are 2 pages related to a poetry analysis, but you can easily delete those if you do not have access to the poems in the (6th grade) Collections literature book that we used.)
