Goals: phonemic awareness, fine motor

Add some zip to phonemic awareness tasks with a Zig Zag! These easy to make activities will become a staple in your room, especially if you work with groups because they keep hands busy. Students will match pictures, letters or words by crossing the yarn from one side to the other. A small notch holds the finished project in place until work can be checked.

Each Zig Zag contains nine pairs for matching most of which are an adorable Smarty Symbol.

To create, print the Zig Zags on cardstock and laminate. To make quick work of cutting, use a paper cutter to cut into large rectangles and use a scissor to cut the triangular zig zags. Punch a hole in the top of each Zig and Zag and a notch at the bottom. Attach a 9 foot piece of yarn at the top and you’re ready to go!

BONUS: This set includes Zig Zags with random matches AND a duplicate set of Zig Zags with straight line matches. These “Green Light” Zig Zags are designed for lower level students that need additional “perfect” practice or have fine motor skills that make traditional Zig Zags frustrating. They contain the same name and items, but are easily identified by their green colored title.

This set includes Zig Zags for: rhyming (2), initial sound & letter match (2 consonants, 2 consonant diagraph/blends), compound words (2), short a words, short e words, short o words, short u words, long a words, long i words. FREEBIE: 3 Zig Zags for lower/uppercase letter matching; 4 Zig Zags for lower/uppercase letter sequencing.
