Physical science or chemistry students in this two-day lab follow safety procedures and perform a single displacement lab, reacting a starting amount of solid zinc with a fixed amount of 6M hydrochloric acid. Other lab groups will test varying amounts of starting solid zinc. Students follow a user-friendly procedure with an organized layout to determine the mass of ZnCl2 formed. They will collect data from other lab groups that started out with different starting masses of zinc to complete their data table. They will then calculate the mass ratio of zinc reacted with zinc chloride formed. Students will classify and analyze the reaction. They will also address sources of possible student error.
This is a two-page lab manual. This product listing does not come with zinc metal, concentrated hydrochloric acid, or any of the required lab equipment [ring stand, Bunsen burner, clay pipe stem, evaporating dish, electronic balance, tongs, large test tube, test tube clamp, wood splint, etc.]. The teacher may need to prep 6M HCl solution. I included a key for the post-lab questions with the answers in red font. Group results and calculations may vary due to student experimental error. This lab is editable.
