I use this zodiac characterization lesson when teaching Romeo & Juliet. Before this lesson, the class will have already read a portion of the play (been exposed to formatting dialog and inserting action-oriented stage directions) and participated in some writing and discussion about destiny, astrology, and Shakespeare’s portrayal of Romeo and Juliet as a pair of “star-cross’d” lovers. This lesson asks students to become a character with specific traits aligned to a zodiac sign. In pairs, students use action directions and dialog to bring a character to life according to specific scenarios.
Time frame: 50-60 min.
