My name is Maureen Ordnung. I believe that students learn best when they are intrigued and can connect the lesson to their own lives, or they are working so hard to find the solution that they forget they are doing math. I have created this activity to do the latter. It is engaging and exciting to the students. In this lesson the students will be placed in the in a world plagued by a zombie apocalypse . This can be used as a review game, or just additional practice, and is designed to put students into the role of a survivor with strong incentives that such a person would have.
This lesson is also universal. It can be applied to any subject or topic. (I usually use it with math.) The students will be given the beginning of a story about a zombie apocalypse loosely based on the TV series The Walking Dead. In the beginning of class they will be given the first paragraph of the story along with a question. They will read the story and solve the problem which will lead them to the next paragraph and problem. Along the way they will be given choices as to how they want to proceed through the story so they can identify as closely as possible to their character. As the story reaches the climax the students work harder to complete the questions to see what happens next.
