Product Description

This zoo habitat animal pop up craft will be an adorable hit plus it will help promote reading. Your students will illustrate/draw their very own background scene. Add an animal and the emergent reader text and you have an educational craft to display. Create a few more to combine for an emergent reader book that your students have illustrated. This isn't just one craft. Your download includes 12 animals. There are also 4 text versions so you can differentiate for your students. Pick a repeating text: I see a ___, This is a ___, or Here is a ____. Copy the varied text page and combine all three of the sentence styles mixing the order, and in turn, you are challenging your growing readers. Add the "I like the zoo" text to the zoo entrance pop up page for your display title or use it for the last page in the book as a conclusion.

Your prep is so easy.

Just copy the blank pop-up pattern onto tag or cardboard.

The animals and text can be copied on regular paper or tag.

Light gray lines show you where to cut to create strips easy for beginning cutters.

Need to Know More?

Your students will draw the background scene. Green makes grass and brown makes dirt. Add a bush, a rock, a sun, or anything the kids want. Add a blue puddle of water. That elephant might want to spray some water on itself.

Your download includes 12 animals ready to be colored and glued to the background scene. I recommend having the students use colored pencils to color the animals as their legs are thin and would be challenging for a crayon. Instructions along with photos are included showing how to cut so that the animals and text pop-up right out of the scene.

Have each student make one pop up, have a group make a book, or let each student make a book. (Inviting volunteers to come in to assist with the cut and glue steps might be sanity saving.)

Extend your students’ knowledge.

There are 12 animals.

Six are basic animals that most children learn first:

  • zebra, elephant, lion, kangaroo, penguin, camel

The other six animals may expand their knowledge:

  • tiger, chimp, hippo, bison, gorilla, rhino

Bonus activity ideas are included.

There are several “Teacher Tip” bonus ideas included that will extend the materials so you can do a few additional activities. I hope you enjoy the bonus suggestions.

Draw in a background to create a coloring book page (if you must).

You can draw a background scene onto the blank pop-up page before you copy it. This will create a coloring book type background page. However, I have found that young kids can be amazing artists. So give them a chance to draw. I know there are many people who say, “I can’t draw”. However, a cloud is pretty easy. Draw a second cloud and add some lines going down and suddenly you have a tree. Help your students develop a growth mindset so that they give every new challenge a try - even drawing.
