Zoo Animals Opinion Writing ---
This activity is connected to CCGPS ELACCKW1: Use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to compose opinion pieces in which they tell a reader the topic or the name of the book they are "writing" about and state an opinion or preference about the topic or book. The topic for this opinion writing packet is "zoo animals." These opinion writing activities are great to put in a writing center for students to choose which pictures to use to give their opinions about.
This pack has been revised and includes 25 pages. The first 12 pages include the following zoo animals (one animal per page) giraffe, bear, monkey, elephant, alligator, lion, zebra, panda, hippo, tiger, kangaroo, and rhino. Each page includes a picture of the animal with the animal name under it. Each page also asks “Do you like (animal name)? Why or why not?” then it has four blank lines for students to write on to tell their opinion about the particular animal. Students love telling their opinions. This activity encourages students to give the reason why they like or do not like each animal.
The next six pages include picture choices of two zoo animals. The six pages include: giraffe/bear, monkey/elephant, alligator/lion, zebra/panda, hippo/tiger, and kangaroo/rhino. Each page includes two picture choices for students to choose between to tell which they think is the best. Each page says “Which zoo animal do you like better?” and then it has four blank lines for students to write on to tell why they think their choice is the best. Students can also circle their choice to help keep them focused on which animal they are writing about.
The last six pages include picture choices of two zoo animals. These picture choices are the same as the ones mentioned above. The difference is that this set of 6 pages has a writing prompt (sentence starter). The six pages include: giraffe/bear, monkey/elephant, alligator/lion, zebra/panda, hippo/tiger, and kangaroo/rhino. Each page includes two picture choices for students to choose between to tell which they think is the best. Each page says “In my opinion (it shows the two picture choices) _____are better because…,” then it has three blank lines for students to write on to tell why they think their choice is the best.
The very last page includes an entire page with writing lines only for additional writing space if needed.
Students love telling which item they like the best. This activity encourages students to give the reason why they think their choice is the best. Teachers can also use these writing activities as a whole class activity. Assigning these activities for a homework assignment can include parents in helping increase their child’s writing skills. However you choose to use these activities, I hope your students develop a love for writing.
