This game allows students to focus on the onset (beginning sound) and rime (final sounds) in words. For example, in the word “cat”, the “c” is the onset and “at” is the rime. Similarly, in the words “chat”, the onset is “ch” and the rime is “at”.
This game can be played with a whole class, small groups or individually. Students select a rime card and try to find onset cards that make a word when combined with the rime card.
This game includes full instructions on how to play, a game board, rime cards and onset cards. The onset cards all feature various zoo animals. Blank cards are also included for you to add more onsets or rimes. There are 86 onsets and 54 rimes included. There is also a record sheet for students to write the words and nonsense words they created.
This game is a great addition to any literacy center! I teach a new word family each week and as I introduce our weekly word family, I add that rime to the game. My students get so excited to play with the new rime!
