To review Perimeter and Area I have my students create Zoo Maps.
Students brainstorm 6 different animals - 2 large and 4 small/medium animals. They solve the enclosures perimeter and areas to make sure their animals will fit (after we discuss that large animals need to be in larger spaces).
I differentiate by giving struggling students (those that haven't completely mastered the concept) a map that has the rectangles labeled for them. They need to solve the formulas for perimeter and area based on the numbers listed.
The students that need a challenge, I give the a blank version that they can either use a ruler to measure the edges or they can come up with their own measurements. They then solve the area and perimeter using their own numbers.
Included in this product:
*Student Direction Sheet
*Labeled Map with 6 enclosures
*Blank Map with 6 enclosures
*Answer Sheet that allows students to record the perimeter and area for animals A-F
*Answer Key for labeled map
*Updated 3/5/14 to add a half sheet of typical zoo animal clip art to help with the brainstorm or the decorating aspect of the process.
I hope you find this helpful in your classroom. My students usually complete this for Open House, and it makes an eye catching bulletin board.
