This set of worksheets were originally paired with a BrainPop video that introduces multiplication through feeding animals at the zoo. They can just as easily be used on their own.
Set includes 12 variations on the same set-up. Students are given an amount of animals and an amount of food to give each one. They must draw a picture representing the situation and then express it as a basic multiplication fact.
I used the variation of problems to accommodate students who work at different paces - the more giraffes they have to draw, the slower they'll go! This helped most of my students finish around the same time.
I used this in my 4/5 split to start our multiplication unit and reintroduce the concept through visualization. It could certainly be used in lower grades as well as an introduction. However, never underestimate students' love of drawing - even my fifth graders were into this.
