A Focus on the Question activity.
Set of 5 word problems. Information is given for each problem (info is the same...only the questions change). The information provided is from the local zoo. You can use it as is or change out the chart for information from your local zoo. Each questions requires that students look at the given information, decide what information to use, and then solve. These problems can be done in such a way that they take no more than 15 minutes (to solve and discuss), but could also be turned into longer activities.
These problems go with the Common Core practice of "make sense of problems and persevere in solving them" and incorporate different operations.
I have students discuss their answers (and strategies for solving) before going over as a class. I have the problems on the board for everyone to see. When a student has a unique way of solving a problem, I have that student solve the problem on the board for all to see.
