11th grade age of faith unit materials - wampanoag stories cultural comparison chart and prompt for comparative essay
If you're like me, you are probably pissed that the 11th grade American Lit text does not include native stories. So I went and scoured and found some of my own. We read these, along with the puritan excerpts (bradstreet, bradford, edwards) in the text, discern similar and dissimilar themes and compare, and come up with a well written, well backed essay out of the whole thing. This ended up being one of my best units because of the comparison aspect, it is so clear how culturally faithful the natives are with regards to the underlying themes in their shared stories, as opposed to how fear driven the puritans are with regards to the underlying themes in their writings. There are a couple of similarities in the cultures, enough to make this clash study highly interesting in a way that none of the universal text books have done.
