Skip Counting Activity
If you teach second grade math in a state which has adopted the Common Core State Standards you might be interested in this skip counting activity. It will work for first grade math teachers in the state of Virginia as well.
This activity will get your students moving! Use it in your outside space or within your classroom. The activity is called, "Kids To Corners". It can be also be called, "People To Posters" when using it outside.
Here's how is works:
Post 4 of the skip counting patterns in the corners of your classroom. (This will be one poster per corner.) The teacher reads a counting pattern such as, "310, 320, 330, 340". Students determine the number pattern. (Counting by ones, tens, fives, twos, or hundreds). Then, students move to the appropriate corner of the classroom.
If you are using this activity outside where there is more space, the posters can be spaced further apart allowing students to "MOVE" even more!
Here's what's included:
1. 5 Posters
Poster 1: Counting By Ones
Poster 2: Counting By Tens
Poster 3: Counting By Fives
Poster 4: Counting By Twos
Poster 5: Counting By Hundreds
2. First Grade Counting Sequence Sheet
3. Second Grade Counting Sequence Sheet
4. Student-created number pattern template (First Grade)
5. Student-created number pattern template (Second Grade)
These packet can be adapted for first or second grade level depending on which posters and counting sequences you choose to use.
There is very little preparation involved with this activity. Print the posters and tape them up. Print the posters with colored card-stock if desired. For long lasting use, laminate them. If you are using the counting sequences included, you will need to print these as well.
Purchase is for one classroom.
