I use picture vocabulary/spelling lists with my lower level ELL students. However, these lists could be used by any teacher and for any student. I usually focus on a theme or a phonics skill. The pictures help with comprehension for ELL students. I usually print them out for my students every Monday. You could also display them on a TV screen/smartboard, etc. Students copy the words twice on their spelling list paper so they have a copy at school and at home. Then, we have a test on Friday over the words. They complete a regular spelling test in addition to a picture match and dictated sentence. Keep an eye out for the assessments that come along with these lists. It will include a word bank, pictures, and a dictation piece. This could also be used for Adult ELL education. It helps with basic reading skills/word identification, too.
