This game will help students not only learn what similes and metaphors are, but it will also help them learn the differences between them and how to build each one. Players take turns rolling die then draw word cards according to which number they roll. As nouns, describing words (adjectives and adverbs), and connecting words (conjunctions) are accumulated players race to see who can build the first simile or metaphor that makes sense. Students can build their figurative speech sentence with only the words they have collected, or trade with other players. I hope your students will enjoy this game as much as my RTI 4th and 5th grade students have. Along with small group instruction, Super Similes and Mighty Metaphors would also work well as a part of your 90 minute Literacy block, and as a standardized test review on figurative language.
