This is an innovative approach to introducing the author's purpose in To Kill A Mockingbird. The students will actually get a real estimate of their own subconscious racial bias. There is a teacher's edition included with the activity.
The #heavylifting approach to To Kill A Mockingbird is to introduce the author’s purpose from the beginning to make the experience more meaningful and academically worthwhile for the students. This approach allows students of all abilities to connect and read at a more advanced level. This novel is an attempt to address both the conscious and subconscious biases that shape American society. At their best, these biases provide some humor and misunderstanding between races, classes, sexes etc. At their worst these biases result in tragedy and death. Through this exercise, students can become aware of their own biases and begin a process where they learn not to condemn others “in the secret courts of men’s hearts.”
