On to Wall Street! The study of the Stock Market is a multi-faceted, multi-discipline curriculum that promotes understanding of the economy and mathematics. BORING, RIGHT? What’s more engaging for an elementary or middle school classroom of kids than a hands-on, project-based approach, especially when iPads are thrown into the mix?
Using iPads for The Stock Market is the perfect vehicle to promote enthusiasm. This step-by-step lesson plan is designed to be done in the classroom, in groups of 4 students, with the use of iPad technology and the Yahoo! Market Dash App, a free application. But don't worry: you can still do this with laptops or desktop PCs!
This unit contains not only instructions and a timeline for you but everything the students will need: an introduction to the Stock Market handout; vocabulary and a vocab test with key; buy, sell, and tracking sheets with examples; visual aids; a culminating report and a grade rubric. This math unit allows students to study trends in the economy and the workings of investment strategies in a real-world setting with Common Core correlation. Students propose portfolios of stocks and mutual funds, “buy” them with hypothetical money, and then track them for three to four weeks to determine if they have capital gains or losses after “selling”. Have fun!
PLEASE DOWNLOAD THE FREE SUPPLEMENT TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF CHANGES IN THE APP. MARKET DASH HAS BEEN REPLACED WITH YAHOO! FINANCE AND THE SUPPLEMENT WILL WORK BEAUTIFULLY WITH THE ORIGINAL UNIT.
