I introduced this by having a class discussion on speed bumps. We talked about how they slow you down to make your aware of your surroundings. I then apply it to my students who do not pass one iReady lesson after two attempts. I remind them that this is not a bad thing because it helps them to think more critically.

When I see the notification pop up on my iReady account on the Online Instruction page, I ask the student to bring me their iReady Data Tracker. On their tracker, I look for them to have an updated iReady lesson log. Under the lesson that the student had to complete twice, I add the lesson a third time in any color ink. This provides a visual for the student. I then assign the lesson to them a third time.

I add their name to the Speed Bump class list (included in this product) for their class, so I can have an easy visual of my repeat offenders for my records. The information on my sheet matches the information at the top of their iReady Speed Bump packet.

I go over the packet with the students if needed. If not, the must explain the purpose of each section of the packet to me before working on the lesson:

( 1 ) Reflection: The student and I have a brief discussion on their level of effort.* I use the information from iReady to discuss:

  • Student performance history
  • Grade level
  • Lesson percentage
  • iReady suggested lesson length vs. actual student time
  • Outside factors that may be affecting them

*If you don't have time, you can have students reflect on their own and check the appropriate box.

(2) Lesson/Instruction Notes: Students take notes on important information needed to help them pass the lesson. This varies by student. Some students use graphic organizers to help them further organize their thoughts.

(3) QUIZ Question and Answer analysis: I refer to the example within the packet of Little Read Riding Hood as I explain how to break down the question to find what it is looking for and an explanation of each answer choice. Students copy down the question from their QUIZ questions ONLY. Students circle key words that are important in answering the question and they underline any words that may help them find where to find the answer. For EACH answer choice, students are responsible for EXPLAINING why they think an answer is correct or incorrect. I am able to "see" their thinking and assist when needed.

(4) Additional Notes/Comments: Sometimes the students realize why they missed a question and want to tell about it! This is the perfect place for them to record their "aha moments" or to ask questions if they are still confused.

Feedback from students have been NOTHING but positive. They are really starting to understand their lessons and I have fewer notifications on my end. Hopefully, this happens for your and your students as well! :-)
