This tool walks students through the steps of solving a problem successfully. It is also in the format of an iPhone, and students LOVE this part! To them it is "hip" and therefore they are are more likely to use it (well my kids are).
I used to have a display on my math bulletin board with these steps, but for some reason they would never look up at it. Now this is something that they can keep at their desk, take home, and reference whenever they need it.
While the "phone" has colored buttons, I only make them high light what the problem is asking them. This is the biggest obstacle for most students. I just added the other colors for fun!!
The Problem Solving steps are:
1. What is the problem asking you?
2. Make a plan! How to solve it.
3. Solve the problem.
4. Is my answer correct?
