This is an introductory lesson that uses picture books to introduce students to the effect war has on civilization and the general population. The picture books suggested for use are written with the older student the projected audience. Each book tells the story of how war has affected the way of life for the main characters. While some of the characters may be young in the book, the impact of war on the entire community can be understood.
Adding picture books to the unit has been the focus of a pilot program that showed increased student learning by 30%. The focus of this study was ELL students, but all struggling students can benefit from the illustrations, narrative text, and selective vocabulary that is used.
Discussion questions can lead students to understand how everyone is affected by violence and war., The introductory lesson can be adapted from grades 4-12.
The packet includes a teaching guide for using picture books with older students, a guide for selecting appropriate picture books, and a listing of books for this topic. The listing of books also include a short synopsis of each book.
