This is an outline used to teach the 5-paragraph essay to beginning writers. I have allowed room for transition sentences and extra details, but for struggling writers, I tell them they just need to have at least 3 supporting details. Since I have been using this outline, our OGT scores have risen. It truly helps kids who are overwhelmed by writing an essay. Once they do the outline, they just have to copy it in paragraph form, and fine-tune it for the rough draft. After a student does the outline a few times, he/she usually remembers the format and can easily write a 5-paragraph essay without the outline.
