This is an AMAZING science activity that has students practice the scientific method through designing their own experiment. This activity supports the engineering standards found in the Next Generation Science Standards.

This lab is based around the concept of pH and can be a great practice for students currently learning this topic.

*Students need to understand the basics of the scientific method to complete the worksheets in this packet.

Students are tasked with designing an experiment based on the pH of a liquid. They are given a list of materials and equipment that are available to use. Using this list, they must design the steps of their experiment.
These steps include:
Problem
Variables
Independent
Dependent
Hypothesis
Materials
Procedure
Safety Materials
Data Collection
Lab Illustration

Students complete each of these steps by filling out an experimental design worksheet.
There is a modified version of the worksheet included in the document.

There is a lab glossary included for any students who are confused about any materials or equipment that are available for the lab.

This activity can be done in a variety of ways:
Can be used as a scientific method assessment.
Students can complete this as a class activity. Students can work in groups and present their work.
Students can complete this activity and then actually carry out the actual lab that they create.

Teacher instructions are included. Instructions provide ideas on how to carry out this activity. It also includes ways to use this activity in an inclusion setting.

Next Generation Science Standards:
MS-ETS1-1: Define the criteria and constraints of a design problem with sufficient precision to ensure a successful solution, taking into account relevant scientific principles and potential impacts on people and the natural environment that may limit possible solutions.

MS-ETS1-4: Develop a model to generate data for iterative testing and modification of a proposed object, tool, or process such that an optimal design can be achieved.
