My name is Sue Donaldson and have taught elementary school for 30 years in south Florida. I have always incorporated drawing in my classroom lessons, no matter what subject we were studying. I have found that boys and girls can “own” words and recall facts when an original illustration accompanies each.
Some of my teammates are not comfortable with drawing in their classrooms, but wanted to use the “whole brain” approach. I have created word family “charts”, phonics sorts and a variety of thinking maps to support lessons from the Journey’s reading series for First Grade.
These pages HAVE NOT been created as worksheets. They are simply a guide for teachers, as they introduce the “story of the week”, the new words and phonics targets.
The following set can be used for the first story, “What is a Pal?” I have used these in my classroom by modeling the words and illustrations, step by step, on the document camera. All drawings are “teacher and kid” friendly, with simple lines, for successful artists! My students enjoyed filling up their spiral notebooks, as they became better spellers and readers each week!
