This is a copy of simplifying fractions with something I did called pizza fractions.
Preview is missing parts of lesson that you get once you buy it.
This is a lesson that takes places over several days and the students work groups.
Students will understand fractions are part of a whole, how to simplify fractions, and that when reduced some fractions reduce to same number as other fractions.
First students will write down definitions. Then glue whole circle/pizza to page. Next talk about how to simplify fractions and equivalent fractions. Have students work on some in groups and alone. Follow directions below.
I gave each student in the classroom a different fraction to simplify. The list of fractions are included.
The circles in the document are the pizza and each students gets a whole pizza. They can cut it out and decorate it like pizza sauce.
Then they get another circle/pizza that corresponds with there fraction. Example (5/10) would get the circle cut into 10 pieces. Now they have to simplify that fraction (5/10) in order to know to cut the pizza in to even pieces. Example (5/10 simplified is 1/2) so they have to cut the pizza in half. Now the decorate the top circle like the top of a pizza and staple it on.
After all done with lesson have student list 3 things they learned at bottom of page.
I put mine in the hallway once completed.
