Here is a step by step guide to teaching conventions within the 6 traits formula using picture books as a key element. Students are given examples of good writing and then write their own version copying the format of the picture books. This gives students guidance for their writing, while allowing them to begin writing their own ideas. Using the same format as the picture books scaffolds students into writing so they can gain confidence in their writing skills and allows them to venture into new writing styles. The lesson plans include what to do before, during, and after reading the book, as well as writing activities. There are a number of books included that you can choose from to read with specific guides for each book.
