In my classroom it is almost impossible to find a sharp pencil and a working dry erase marker. We use "the GREAT challenge" as a way to keep students motivated to keep track of their things and keep them in good condition.
How I use:
Students receive 10 pencils and 2 dry erase markers (1 big, 1 small) in a pencil bag. This pencil bag is used only for these items. It is their job to keep track of these items throughout the week and keep them working and looking nice. Every Friday students turn in their bag and I check it (kind of time consuming) and I sharpen their pencils and check their markers. I will sharpen dull pencils and give them more if they have lost some. They get 2 stickers if they earned them - 1 for each - markers and pencils. I then put the bags back on students desks and Monday morning they place their stickers into a book. When they have 10 they earn a prize! This can be done with just pencils or just markers as well.
I use these posters to remind them and to hang out their pencil turn in bin! :)
