A large vocabulary decreases the amount of communication breakdowns due to misunderstanding a word’s meaning or unfamiliarity with its definition. A large vocabulary also improves a student’s reading comprehension, rate, and number of sight words. This long-term instructional plan focuses on vocabulary development to help students become better communicators, receptively and expressively. Plans focus specifically on special education, ELLs and deaf/HH learners but all students benefit from explicit vocabulary instruction. Designed to be used throughout the year, lessons and units can be repeated using a variety of texts and vocabulary lists. Not just for English teachers, will work will in social studies and science classrooms as well!
