Unit 1 “survival guide” – a full six weeks of curriculum formatted as a student handout with daily objectives and checks for understanding. This comprehensive “survival guide” presents an overview of the core issues in history, beginning with the rise of civilization through the Classical Period, ending with the fall of Rome. Each lesson comes with a daily objective at the top, key points aligned to the rigor of AP but accessible for high school students, maps, graphics, and / or sources to analyze. This resource is teacher AND student friendly, in that it is designed to be printed and given to students as a study guide, but it also lends itself well to build individual lessons or discussions around each objective (and contains homework assignments and Checks for Understanding for use as a workbook in class)
Topics covered include: Historiography & the study of history, The Neolithic Revolution and its effects, the growth of civilization and the concept of ‘barbarism’, Mesopotamia (as a case study in the rise of civilization), Hammurabi’s Code (as an example of power structure formation in early civilization), Intro to the Classical Period, Classical Athens (democracy and rationalism), the rise of the Roman Republic, the transition of Rome from Republic to Empire, The Golden Age of Rome, the Rise of Christianity, Silk Road Trade, and the Fall of Rome.
