Word Works was created as an individual writing aid to help students apply and process newly obtained information with the mechanics of writing. This tri-fold design is user friendly and can be easily stored with a students wrting binder or folder. Laura created this writing tool as a quick guide to provide a spark for the young writer and a needed boost for the adult that needs to produce a speedy but, precise, professional correspondence. Some examples of student use are: students are taught a unit on the environment and the interdependence of species, then the students would have to write a persuasive to a development company on why it would be a bad idea to build a shopping mall or amusement park near the lake. After a Native American unit the students would "compare and contrast' two native American tribes. Following a study of Pioneer life were the students learned about early American history the students would write a 'narrative or descriptive' piece on what is was like being a child growing up in those times. Besides providing the framework for such writing styles this writing tool provides unique vocabulary ideas for common writing dilemmas as needing multiple words for 'saw, said, touch and to go words'. Additionally, it provides ideas to spur a students creative process with such things as sentence stretchers, transition words, sequence and how to words. In order to support the writing styles Word Works provides persuasive, location and comparative word ideas. To help facilitate creativity and personal voice there are similes and story starters to get the young writer started.
