TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I teach high school English in a Title 1 school in Texas. I am currently the lead 10th grade teacher for my campus and help create 10th grade curriculum for our district. I have taught 9th, ,12th, A.P. Literature, and AcaDeca. I have also helped with UIL Literary Criticism. In college, I went overseas and taught English at the college level in Bangladesh and Thailand. I have a Masters in Curriculum Instruction from UTA- Arlington. I will also obtain with my degree certifications as a Reading Specialist, Mater Reading Teacher, and ESL Specialist. My master's paper is focused on how using Y.A. novels can help improve student's reading comprehension and help improve standardized test scores at the same time.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe learning should be interactive and relevant. I am constantly trying to find as many read world applications for learning as possible. Students need to realize that they are not learning a story but are learning skills and lessons that help them succeed later on in life. When it comes to curriculum, I believe that one of the biggest issues with education today it that we have a "hit-and-run" curriculum. We spend 3 weeks on poetry and then 3 weeks on stories. While that is absolutely necessary sometimes for skills, learning occurs at a deeper level when you continually reinforce skills and thoughts. I love themed units. Themed units help to reinforce literary skills by covering each genre constantly as well as reinforces the ideas and understanding of each reading piece by continually comparing and contrasting. A theme unit allows students to deepen their understanding of each piece they read by the next piece challenging or supporting the previous opinions. The end result is a wide range of skill sets covered with each unit and understanding of ideas at a deeper level than the first one or two times read through.
