At 4-group Math™ we know that children with a solid foundation in number sense find math easy and fun! The concept of number sense is as important to mathematics learning as phonemic awareness (or phonics) is to reading.
4-group Math™, a base-ten model which remains consistent across place-values, uses a unique visual model for conceptualizing the quantity of a number and for composing and decomposing those numbers. It is the first method of its kind that leverages what the child’s brain already has the ability to do – subitize four objects in a square pattern. Simply stated, subitizing is the rapid, accurate and confident understanding of the quantity of a set of objects—without counting. The ability to subitize four objects in a square pattern exists in all children (and adults).
Testimonial of five kindergarten teachers at Lake Hills Elementary, Bellevue, WA: “This year, we have seen tremendous leaps in what the children are capable of doing intellectually because of the activities and ideas Lynn has developed. All of our students are excited about math and see themselves as capable mathematicians, more so than in our collective years here at Lake Hills Elementary School. For the first time in our years of experience, we have observed that the children are excited about what we are learning and love the idea of math. No students have joined the “I hate math” group this year!”
