I have taught at the university for over a decade and in the high school for five years.
Because history comes alive only when it is seen and felt, imagined and reimagined, discussed and debated, I use photographs, cartoons, music, food, drink, and anything else that will draw a student's attention. My class is noisy. My students will not fall asleep. With any luck, they will be riveted. Learning is a not a spectator sport, and this is not a lecture class.
