TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching for 16 years in the Los Angeles Unified School District. I have taught grades 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6. I have also been a math coach for the District.

MY TEACHING STYLE

When walking into my classroom, the observer will immediately notice an entire group of students working together to deepen their own understanding of the concept being discussed. Students will be comfortably taking intellectual risks. Peers will be responding with skilled language to enable the “intellectual risk-takers†to powerfully reflect on their own understanding without feelings of ineptitude or doubt. All students will be evaluating opinions and openly agreeing and disagreeing with their peers and the teacher. Confident students will be freely connecting their current understanding to prior knowledge, and multiple curricular disciplines. And, ultimately, the empowered students will be assimilating and accommodating the learned material into the schema of their own lives and the world around them.

This past year, I renewed my National Board Credential. The renewal process allowed me to reflect on the professional growth I have experienced during the first 16 years of my teaching career. I have come to realize that my pedagogical approach has truly been refined. I would like to collaborate with fellow educators to share my expertise and ultimately, positively impact student achievement.
