Jacob Aringo is Filipino and Pacific Islander American, born in San Francisco, raised and currently resides in Daly City. He is a S.T.E.A.M (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) teacher at Herbert Hoover Middle School in San Francisco. He has been teaching for a total of 14 years – 6 years as a high school science, math, and technology teacher and 8 years as a middle school S.T.E.A.M teacher. Jacob Aringo is a fellow graduate of SF State with a B.S. in Biology: Concentration in Ecology, Secondary Ed Teaching Credential in Science, Math, and Computer Science, and a M.S. in Education: Concentration in Instructional Technology. He is also a recipient of the 2019 CUE Outstanding Teacher of the Year, EdTalk Speaker for California Teaching Summit in 2016 and San Francisco CUE in 2017, and a National Board Certified Teacher. He is part of the Exploratorium Leadership Institute where he mentors 1st and 2nd years teachers in the Exploratorium Teacher Institute program. He has a done a variety of workshops with the Coalition of Essential Small Schools, CUE, and SFUSD around the growth mindset, gamification in education, game design, and designing for understanding.
His professional interests is applying intrinsic motivational systems and gamification principles in his instructional designs to immerse youth across backgrounds in engaging in S.T.E.A.M. He is a fan of learning by doing as it gives students an opportunity to investigate and immerse themselves in a variety of real world S.T.E.A.M based dilemmas, apply habits of minds and 21st century skill sets, and innovate to solve real world problems. In the S.T.E.A.M program, students explore the concepts of innovation and design thinking and use those concept to design and build solutions for a better future.
