I began my teaching career as a reading and language arts teacher in January of 1999. I have been teaching history for the past 10 years and totally love it! I have worked on our curriculum team to write the Common Final Assessment for 6th grade World History with Orange County Public Schools in Orlando, Florida. I was also on our textbook adoption committee, which sadly gave us poor choices to select our text from. (So if you are from Orange County please don't blame me for our textbook!! I'm sorry! We did what we could.) Like you, my students vary widely in ability from those who can not read at all to those who are gifted and need enrichment. I frequently work with my peers to figure out what we need that we don't have. In my spare time I like to create worksheets and use my students and my friends students to improve them for future students.
I want my students to see that history is relevant. I am not a teacher who sits at her desk. Who can do that!? I think about all of the horribly boring history teachers I had in the past and try to do the exact opposite of what they did. How boring it was to have my American History teacher read out of the textbook for us when he "taught" his favorite lesson on "the Boston Tea Party." I remember thinking, "Thank God! He's going to teach today!" only to be disappointed when he read from the text in his monotonous voice.
I fly under the radar. I am the girl who does it all and doesn't really want the attention. I am here for the students. If I got an award I would cherish it, but honestly my favorite awards are the notes from my students and their parents. Their words mean more than any others.
I attended Valencia Community College, now Valencia College and earned my AA degree before transferring to the University of Central Florida in January 1996. While at the University of Central Florida I was entered into the National Honors Society for English and earned my BA in English Literature in May of 1998. From August of 1998 until May of 1999 I went back to the University of Central Florida to pick up necessary courses for my teaching certification.
I have adopted two amazing children from China so I really love to teach China and have been working to create some good things. So if it isn't here yet, I'm probably working on it.
