I have been involved in teaching in many ways, both formal and informal. My first position was working as a preK aide in a 2 year old class. Eventually, I got my post bach teaching certification in 4-8 science, and student taught 6th grade and junior high. After becoming certified in 2007, I took many positions as a worked my way into our local district. I substituted at all grade levels, and worked as a tutor hired by the school. My tutorial ranges were wide: kindergarten reading and math, 4th grade writing and high school TAKS (EXIT level...primarily algebra). Privately, I also tutored 4th grade reading as well as algebra. Eventually, I worked as a kindergarten music aide (in title only...I had my own classroom) and got one semester of teaching 1st grade under my belt when a position opened in the middle of the year. Finally, I attained a position as a life skills teacher for 3rd and 4th grade. I ended up in 4th grade reading and social studies at the same campus. I left teaching and continued tutoring in the homeschool setting for academic vocabulary/letter and number recognition. I also tutored 4th grade reading and 5th grade math. I am now a long term substitute in an Algebra 2 classroom. My informal experience includes working with younger children in Sunday school and teaching ESL to hispanic Texans and Canadian Asian immigrants. I love everything I have taught and am excited to share materials that have aided my instruction.
I like to create a very structured environment with high expectations. Then, I enjoy allowing my students to have a lot of freedom and creativity within the parameters I have created. Call them centers, stations, group work...I find this method of teaching cuts down significantly on behaviors and, with the right group, can promote the growth of all learners. I enjoy my instructional time, but I try to keep it short and to the point. I use a lot of images to supplement my instruction, both in power point and smart board presentations.
I haven't received any honors as a teacher. Maybe someday! Watching my kiddos learn and seeing their joy in succeeding is my biggest reward.
Got my Bachelor of Science in Psychology with minors in biology and sociology from Stephen F. Austin State University. Went to seminary at Dallas Theological and finished my Master's of Biblical Studies while working on my teaching certificate. Got post bach teaching certification in 4-8 science and have added several certifications since that time. I have a few graduate credits in education and hope to eventually get my reading specialist certificate. I love school and will always be learning something, though I am searching for more informal (and less expensive) ways to do so.
