TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I am a 6th grade World Cultures teacher in Round Rock, Texas! I have been teaching for sixteen years; three years as a 4th grade Language Arts & Social Studies teacher, twelve years as a self-contained 5th grade teacher, & one year as an 8th grade U.S. History teacher. This will be my first year teaching World Cultures.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe that Social Studies should be interactive and student-led. It is not a teacher lecturing from a PowerPoint, 50 minutes of note-taking, or "read this textbook chapter and answer the questions. It is students generating questions, discoveries, and conclusions from exploring maps, primary source quotes, posters, news articles, poetry, and artifacts. It is about making social studies come alive!

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

Nominated for "Who's Who Among America's Teachers 2004" multiple time "Teacher of the Year" nominee

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I graduated from Texas A&M University in College Station in December of 2000 with a degree in Elementary Education. I then graduated from Texas A&M University with a Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction in December 2007.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I am originally from Galveston, Texas. In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family and friends. I have a 3 ½ year old nephew Trent who I adore! I also enjoy doing anything outside in the sun including watersports and swimming. Gymnastics is another one of my hobbies. I was a member of the gymnastics team at Texas A&M and I currently take an adult gymnastics class. I am a member of the Austin Junior League and I volunteer with many non-profit organizations in town through this organization. I also love animals. I have two cats who are my “children!” Things I love include: Dr. Pepper, Texas craft beer, HEB “Houston Blend” and “Pecan” coffee, the beach, flip-flops, cowgirl boots, 1970s lite rock (yacht rock), 90s rap & hip hop, really old country music, the smell of coconut & fresh cut grass, summertime, & the colors yellow & teal!
