I have spent 5 years in 5th grade, 5 years in 3rd grade, and 2 years in kindergarten. I love it all! Now, I am blessed to be home with my two sweet kids - one of which is in first grade this year! It's been such a treat to be on this side of the classroom - volunteering, making lunches, driving carpool, and watching my own reader blossom. What a blessing!
School should be fun (!), engaging, and appropriately challenging for each student. I like hands-on learning with a focus on the Common Core Standards and the integration of curriculum. Students in my class work in groups, in partnerships, and independently. We spend a lot of time in books! I love reading to students of all ages! Even "big" kids need to hear great picture books, and younger students can enjoy listening to chapter books that they can't quite access themselves. Books are truly gifts we can open again and again! I just love stories, and I work to instill that same love in my students.
Hmmm... shining teacher moment? Every time I say goodbye for winter/spring break, and a student says, "Aww.. I don't want to have a break! I love school!"
I graduated from Western Washington University in 2002 with a BA in Elementary Education. In 2007 I went back to school and earned a Masters in Reading and Literacy. I am also a Reading Specialist.
This fall, my husband and I will celebrate 12 years of marriage! We are the blessed parents of Eliana (6) and Benjamin (4). Our family loves being outside, playing together, and date nights ..... well, we love those more than they do :) At the Garcia house, we love all things holiday and strive to make each season special!
